Lyuben Zidarov passed away recently at a 100, and was known as the oldest working illustrator in Bulgaria. He is a source of inspiration for many artists, including myself. His captivating illustrations and storytelling skills have played a crucial role in shaping my creative journey. I grew up reading so many picture books and later young readers fiction illustrated or having covers with his art. Looking at each image opens up a world of interpretations. I particularly like his characters, their fluidity and softness. He used strong bold values combined with the soft texture of gouache/watercolour, seamlessly blending folklore and fantasy. He tells vibrant visual tales that appeal to audiences across generations. When I first encountered his illustrations in classic children’s books, I felt as though each page had the power to transport me into an exciting new world. Reflecting now on his influence, I see how Zidarov's artistic approach has deepened my understanding of creativity and the power of visual narratives.

A Glimpse into Zidarov's World

What a joyful celebration of human imagination. His engaging illustrations invite viewers to dream, explore, and feel a sense of wonder that often fades as we grow older.

His illustrations remind me that creativity has no boundaries. Inspired by his work, I have pushed myself to think outside the box, experimenting with ideas and mediums that challenge my artistic comfort zone. Engaging with art without the fear has led to exciting discoveries in my creative process. The impact of his works on my creativity has been transformative. His illustrations have shaped not only my artistic style but also my approach to storytelling and the significance of imagination in expression, the relentless insistence on remaining true to oneself . As I continue on my creative journey, I always keep his magical worlds close to my heart, his work as a guiding light and inspiration, especially when I feel lost or insecure about my drawings, I look at his art and it makes me feel inspired and empowered again.

I am grateful for the remarkable legacy this illustrator has left to guide and inspire me and countless others.
